How to fish' is a three step process:
- Setting the hook – It is important to set the hook right to trap the fish. Also, the hook should be very sharp. In this step, the hook has to be forced into the mouth of the fish. Generally, one intelligent snap of rod is enough, if the hook is pointed. Though, you may need to apply more force in certain cases. For instance, you may require only one hard strike when you are using a soft-plastic worm rigged as the strike should first drive the worm and then the mouth of the fish. If you will strike repeatedly or too hard with the help of a sea tout, crappie, shad or any other soft-mouthed fish, it may be possible that the hook will be pulled from the mouth.
- Fighting with the fish – Now that you have hooked the fish, it will struggle to get away from the hook. It may make long runs, swim back into the snags, swim around obstacles and other such things. It all depends on the kind of fish that has been trapped. Bonefish, Chinook salmon and carp are strong. On the other hand, cobia and northern pike often give up easily. Small fishes can be caught by simply reeling them. Their struggle can be triumphed over because of the strength of the fishing rod and the line. To enjoy the struggle of fishes you can take lighter tackle. “Pumping the rod” is a technique that is used to fight with larger fishes. For this, you will have to immediately retrieve the line when you will lower the rod till the time it gets horizontal pointing at the fish. After this, stop retrieving and gradually raise the rod upside. Repeat this procedure, when the rod is at the 11 o' clock position.
- Landing the fish – You can land a fish either by hand or by using landing tools like net. If you plan to land a fish from the shore, you can use the method of beaching fish. It is advisable to use this method, only if you want to keep the fish and eat it as the coating on its body will get harmed by this method.
In case, you are planning to net the fish, get the fish under your control first. After this, lead it towards the net. Now put the net into the water and put the fish into the net head first. If it tries to escape, it will swim only in the net. Now that it is completely in the net, simply raise it from the handle. If it is a heavy fish, grasp the rim of the net so that the handle doesn't break or bend. Now that you know how to fish , pick up your equipments and just give it a try!
